Ford’s $325,000+ Mustang GTD, the most track-focused street car the brand has ever built, is finally rolling off the line. But early customers won’t be getting the full package just yet. The lightweight magnesium wheels, a key upgrade for performance and aesthetic, are currently delayed due to supply chain issues.
According to MotorTrend, early GTDs will be delivered with standard aluminum wheels. Once the magnesium sets become available, Ford will offer them to existing buyers for a retrofit.
The shortage stems from a global disruption in the magnesium supply chain. Most magnesium production is concentrated in China and Russia, both of which have faced export restrictions, energy shortages, and trade limitations. These challenges have made it difficult to source the high-grade material needed for automotive applications.
Ford has confirmed that magnesium wheels remain part of the GTD spec. There’s no official delivery timeline, but the company says updates are coming. In the meantime, all GTD orders will ship with aluminum wheels.
For buyers planning to track the car or keep it as a collector’s piece, the delay matters. Magnesium wheels were a key differentiator, cutting unsprung weight and contributing to the GTD’s Nürburgring ambitions.Until the magnesium sets are available, GTD owners will have to settle for aluminum. Functional, yes. But not the performance spec Ford originally teased.
